Captain Nicholls keeps his promise and takes very good care of Joey until Joey is then taken by the Germans. Then they go with the Germans again to pull guns and Topthorn ( Joey's companion) dies. it is a book and film.
He get's stuck in some barbed wire and manages to get a deep cut in his leg.

Michael lives in Devon, England, with his wife, Clare. The book was so good that I would read it again because I loved it and I would love this book because I love animals and it has animals in. ANYONE should read this book. I like having stills from the movie close at hand, since it'll probably be ages before the DVD comes out. They soon get separated and Joey is sent off to war! Amazing read it in two days and was so emotional!! It was a fabulous read and I stongly reccomend it to EVERY horse lover or even action lover!!
The two work hard become so weak that they are taken from being gun holders to hauling an ambulance cart on the front lines. I feel very deeply for Joey because of everything he has been through. I absolutely LOVE this book! When Joey is dragged away, his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he is forced to leave behind.

Joey makes friends with another war horse, Topthorn, and they become really close and protective of each other.
My favourite part is when Albert (the person who bought the horse) found Joey (the horse) at the end just as he was talking about Joey. Albert. And if it does, will he ever find Albert again? He cares about horse things: water, grass, doing his work well, and a kind master to work for. i would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 5.
